Optimising O&M by Using Data Effectively

Most of us who are involved with the Operation and Maintenance (O&M) of complex assets such as power plants are constantly looking for ways to improve the way we work – doing it better, faster and more cost effectively. In the modern world, most of us are also under increasing pressure of time, resources and from competition.

Abstract

We are continually being called upon to do more with less, and as that pressure keeps on increasing every year it often seems to be a race we cannot win, but the answer to many problems may lie in one of the things which we see as a problem – data. We often seem to be overwhelmed with data, whereas what we really need is information and knowledge. This paper explores some of the methods which are being used to transform data into information and knowledge – and how that can be used to optimise our O&M practices and procedures.
